Stadium Concerns Prevent Eagles from Hosting NAIA Regional

Oklahoma Wesleyan baseball is awaiting its fate for the NAIA National Tournament after winning both the regular season and conference tournament titles in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles have been ranked in top eight wire-to-wire this season.

However, they were not selected to host a regional in the national tournament when the NAIA announced the sites last week. In all likelihood this was because of last year’s regional.

The 2017 Bartlesville regional out of the ordinary to say the least. Blustery conditions and the small dimensions of Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium led to an offensive explosion in the regional. Six of the nine games saw both teams eclipse ten runs. In total, 62 home runs were hit in the regional.

However, Even in the tight confines of Doenges Stadium the Eagles still managed to lead the country with a 2.32 team ERA in 2018.

OKWU head coach Matt Parker gives his thoughts on the situation.

Oklahoma City University was a site selected to host and could be a possible destination for the Eagles. Although OCU has been a mainstay in the national top 10 as well and have a strong resume to be a No. 1 seed.

The Eagles still will likely be a No. 1 seed in a regional but is likely they will have to travel outside of the region for postseason play. OKWU will find out where it is headed when the NAIA announces the full bracket at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
