Oklahoma Union was at the forefront of an exciting weekend of basketball around the area. The fifth-ranked Cougar boys’ defeated No. 9 Rejoice Christian to win the Nowata regional, 64-52. Oklahoma Union already knew it was headed to the area tournament already but Saturday’s victory puts it just one away from its first state tournament appearance since 2005.

The Cougars played well early on in the game but let a thirteen point lead completely evaporate. With six minutes left in the fourth quarter the Eagles pulled level at 41 apiece. OKU responded with a 9-2 run over the next two minutes to regain control of the game down the stretch. This and-one bucket from Nate Collier helped the Cougars build momentum.

Kohlsyn Gibson made his impact felt late as well. Gibson scored 10 of his team-high 23 points in the final quarter.

The Cougars will now face Okema on Friday at 8 p.m. at Checotah High School with a chance to clinch a spot at state. OKU head coach Lee Ott talks about why his team has been successful this season.

The Cougars are 23-1 on the season with 18 straight victories. We’ll have continued coverage of Oklahoma Union in the playoffs as the week continues.
