Oklahoma Union Falls Short of State

High School basketball season has come to a close across Osage, Washington and Nowata counties, as the final couple teams that were still kicking in the postseason were bounced on Saturday just one win from state.

The Oklahoma Union boy’s magical 2018-19 season came to a surprising end to Rejoice Christian, 59-31 on Saturday in the Area Consolation Finals in 2A Area II.

It was the same Rejoice Christian team that Oklahoma Union had beaten by 12 just seven days prior in the finals of the Nowata Regional on Feb. 23.

The Cougars fell behind 11-0 in the first four-minutes plus of the contest and never recovered. The closest Oklahoma Union would get is eight later on that quarter. The Cougars trailed by 20 at halftime and would only briefly cut the lead to 18 in the third quarter.

OKU had tallied 18-straight victories before losing in back-to-back games in the 2A Area Tournament in Checotah to end its season - Okemah topped Oklahoma Union 69-49 on Friday.

Despite the losses, the Cougars still had a fantastic season, winning 24 games and being ranked in the top-5 of Class 2A for several weeks. They will return several key players from this season for next year, as well.

Also, the Oklahoma Union girls fell to Chouteau-Maize 52-28 in their Area Consolation Finals game on Saturday. That loss kicked them out of the 2A Playoffs, also just one victory away from state.
