Erin Epperson ended the season where she belonged, at the top of the Oklahoma high school tennis ranks.

Epperson took home to no. 1 singles state title on Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. She polished off her undefeated season at 25-0.

It was a long time coming.

Epperson, a junior, had been to state as a freshman (5th place) and as a sophomore (2nd place), but this was her first win. Epperson says she felt some relief when the final point was scored and she took home the gold.

She defeated Riley Tucker from Edmond North to take home the title. Epperson had dispatched of Jenk’s Sarah Cameron just a match earlier in the semifinals, a rematch of her matchup with Cameron in regionals earlier that week.

Epperson had to win four in a row at state to take home the title. She would either finish undefeated for the year with a state title, or would lose for the first time in 2016. Epperson says the weight of an undefeated season didn’t bother her much.

She just wanted the state title.

Epperson’s individual state title was a cherry on top of a tremendous year for all the Lady Bruin tennis players.

Bailey Covell finished at sixth place in no. 2 singles. Covell fell in the consolation bracket championship match after winning two matches previously.

The doubles team of Avery Bennett and Kelley Gerrish also advanced to the second day of play with a win on Friday.

Overall, head coach Jeff Birk says he wasn’t nervous about Epperson, he says he though she had it in the bag.

Birk spent much of the season praising Epperson’s work ethic, which he says is second to none
