Bartlesville earned its first win of the Lee Blankenship era, 21-14, over class 5A Claremore on Friday night. The Bruins used a strong defensive effort and some timely big plays to secure a tough road victory to open the season.

Claremore struck first with a long touchdown on a screen pass to go up 7-0. The Bruins would respond and tie the game with a 14-play, 67 yard drive that was capped off with a three-yard touchdown run from Deandre Young.

The Bruins then hit on a gamebreaking pass play late in the first half to give themselves a 14-7 lead when Noah Sunday connected with Tom Beard on an 89-yard touchdown strike.

Bartlesville defense forced a turnover on the ensuing possession which led to another quick score just before halftime. The Bruins led 21-7 at the break.

Both defenses held for most of the second half with minimal scoring action. The Zebras would a touchdown in the game’s final 30 seconds but it wouldn’t be enough as Bartlesville secures its first win of 2018.

Sunday tossed for over 200 yards and DeAndre Young ran for two touchdowns.

The Bruins travel to Collinsville next Friday as non-district play continues.
