Today’s flashback takes us to Nowata where an historic basketball season took place. The Ironmen and the group of eight seniors who played nearly all of the minutes in the 2017-2018 season took the program to new heights.

At one point the Ironmen won 17 out of 18 games. The backend of that stretch included three playoff wins. Nowata earned the right to host a regional and won it in thrilling fashion. The Ironmen came from behind and defeated Wynadotte and Ketchum on its home floor.

Head coach Gary Hollingshead talks about the impact of hosting a regional.

The Ironmen would run out of gas in the area tournament, falling to Luther and then getting ousted in a rematch with Ketchum. Nowata finished just one win shy of its first trip to the state tournament since 1984.

Senior Zen Callahan was a force for the Ironmen all season long. Callahan averaged more than 20 points per game and finished his illustrious career as the all-time leading scoring in Nowata history.

The Ironmen will essentially have to start from scratch next season with no significant contributors returning.
