A rural Dewey man has been arrested and is being charged on two felony counts of cruelty to animals and a misdemeanor count of leaving a carcass. A warrant has also been issued for Ashley Hamblin in this case.

It is alleged that on Aug. 22, deputies executed a search warrant on Jason Sherman and Ashley Hamblin's home for warrants related to abuse by caretakers. The home was unoccupied, numerous cats and two ferrets were left in the house without food, water, air conditioning and a temperature that was in the upper 90s.

The cats appeared “boney” and the ferrets had been left in a cage with no access to food or water. Three days prior when trying to make contact with the couple, deputies noted a dead kitten laying on the sidewalk leading to the front door. There was also a dead kitten under a Jeep and when returning three days later, three cats and two cats were removed from the premises due to the poor living conditions.

On Sept. 5, a fourth cat was moved to SPCA and was in need of veterinary care. Hamblin later confirmed that she and Sherman had left the residence to hide from law enforcement because of local warrants and left the animals without proper shelter, food and water.

Sherman's aggregate bond is set at $30,000 and he is due back in court on Sept. 22 at 9 a.m.  Hamblin previously bonded out of jail on another case before this new case was filed. A warrant for her arrest has been authorized.
