Retired Phillips Petroleum Leader Walter Wayne Allen Dead at 85

Walter Wayne Allen, the retired Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Phillips Petroleum Company died last Friday in Houston. He was 85.

He joined Phillips Petroleum Company in 1961 after graduating from Oklahoma State University and serving in the U.S. Army. Allen held assignments in the U.S., the United Kingdom and West Africa before being named vice-president in 1988. He was named to the company’s Board of Directors in 1989 and was named President and Chief Operating Officer in 1991.

Allen served as President and CEO until he was named Chairman of the Board and CEO in 1994. He retired in 1999, 3 years before Phillips merged with Conoco to form ConocoPhillips.

A graveside service will be held April 23 at 2 p.m. at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater.
