The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investing the late Saturday night burglary of Copan Bait & Tackle.

Sheriff Scott Owen said the suspects entered after forcing the lock on the door to open. He said the owner told law enforcement that the suspects stole cash that was on hand.

The incident remains under investigation. Sheriff Owen said they do not know of other property that was stolen at this time. He said they may have some video surveillance that could assist the WCSO in its investigation. If the WCSO is able to identify the suspects, an arrest warrant will be pursued by the Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Owen added that there has been an uptick in burglaries this year. He said there are multiple factors that could’ve contributed to Copan Bait & Tackle being burglarized on Saturday, including early release.

If you have any information pertaining to the crime, you can call 918.332.4000, or you can drop by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 611 SW Adams Boulevard to speak with an investigator. CrimeStoppers can also be reached at 918.336.2583.

Sheriff Owen continues to ask the citizens of Washington County to be extra vigilant when it comes to their property. He said that could include proper lighting, locking your doors, making sure items are secure, and installing security cameras. Above all else, Sheriff Owen asks you to watch out for your neighbors.

In a post on Facebook on Sunday (embedded below), Copan Bait & Tackle announced that they would be closing down the shop until next year. The post said more than $700 of cash was stolen from the bait shop.

Copan Bait & Tackle said they will be finding a new place to put the bait shop besides Copan. The shop said it has a $1,000 reward for anybody who has information or knows the people that burglarized the store. You can remain anonymous.
