A memorandum of agreement for tribal cemetery maintenance between the Delaware Tribe of Indians and the Washington County Board of Commissioners was discussed on Monday morning.

District One Commissioner Mitch Antle said they were maintaining cemeteries three to four years ago when the maintenance crew that was hired at the time was asked by tribal representation with the Delaware Tribe to leave one of the cemeteries. He said that the Delware Tribe said they would handle the work.

In deference to the sovereignty of the Delaware Tribe, the maintenance crew pulled out of the cemetery. The equipment was moved, they exited the facility, and that was that.

Fast forward to January 2020, and Commissioner Antle was approached by a newly elected Delaware Tribe Council Member who asked if Washington County could help with cemetery maintenance. He said he is not comfortable with entering into those facilities apart from some sort of agreement or understanding between the Delaware Tribe and the Commissioners that they in fact want Washington County to come in and maintain the cemeteries.

The memorandum of agreement between the Delaware Tribe of Indians and the Washington County Commissioners that was presented on Monday was approved and signed by Chairman Mike Dunlap.
