A bid for a new fire alarm system was accepted at Monday morning’s meeting of the Nowata County Commissioners. The bid for the new system will cost $49,975. Last Monday the commissioners received a $50,000 REAP grant from Grand Gateway to cover all facets of the project.

Included in the system is detectors for heat, smoke, and carbon monoxide. All monitors will notify dispatch if they are set off. The fire alarm system will cover the entire jail and courthouse building to ensure the safety of prisoners, employees, and the general public.

District 3 commissioner Troy Friddle discussed a statute that will allow county barn employees to work on improvements at the jail. The statute allows the workers to be summoned for up to 120 days in an emergency situation to be used as needed in the county instead focusing solely on roadwork. The commissioners voted to enact the statute.

Chairman Doug Sonenberg stated that the some work was done on the kitchen at the jail this weekend. Sonenberg said work will continue with the hopes that prisoners could be back in the jail within the week.

Commissioner Friddle also announced that bids will be let for the construction on a new district 3 barn. The commissioners will meet again next Monday.
