The Nowata County Commissioners discussed budget concerns and items on the ballot for the upcoming election during Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting.

The brief agenda covered an anonymous donation to the sheriff’s office, an appointment of a new part-time jailer and the approval of the schedule for the county in 2018.

The bulk of the meeting was spent discussing county budget issues. Commissioner Curtis Barnes wanted to encourage voters to approve the renewal of a one-cent tax that has been in effect for ten years. The tax is essential for the funding of road and bridges in Nowata County.

Barnes explains how important the tax is.

The tax will be on the ballot during the upcoming elections on November 14.

The rest of the meeting was spent discussing concerns about the sheriff’s budget and how many people are essential in the operation of that office. Sheriff Sandy Hadley was not in attendance for the meeting.

The Nowata County Commissioners will meet again for a regularly scheduled meeting next Monday November 6.
