Our first high school football scrimmage across Green Country gets going on Thursday, as Bartlesville High makes a trip to Tulsa to face Bishop Kelley.

The scrimmage will be the only dress rehearsal of the preseason for BHS, which begins its real season a week from Friday night (Aug. 29).

Bishop Kelley is coming off a 5-6 season in 5A a year ago. The Bruins did well in this scrimmage last year at Custer Stadium but then struggled out of the gate in non-District play.

Head coach Harry Wright says this scrimmage, and the non-District games early on, will hopefully give his team momentum heading into District action.

We’ve talked about a lot of skill guys both veteran and young over the past few weeks, but one of the keys for Bartlesville this fall will likely be the health of one of their lineman.

Senior John Torres was banged up over the summer but should be ready to go both on Thursday for the scrimmage and for the opener. Torres has been a big buoy for Bartlesville’s offensive line when healthy.

Wright says he has a shot at playing college football, as well.

The scrimmage will start at 5:00 with the seventh and eighth graders. The JV guys go at 7:00 with the varsity guys likely starting around 7:30-8:00 PM in Tulsa.
