Shidler Senior Citizens Building Looking for Funding

Ty Loftis
At Monday's Osage County Commissioners meeting, Sara Mitchell, who takes care of the Shidler Senior Nutrition Citizens Center, spoke to the Board about the need for a contract increase of $200 to keep the doors to her building open. Mitchell said the $820 they are allocated is simply not enough to keep their head afloat.
Mitchell said on average, the operational cost is more than $1,200 a month and they are cutting into a significant amount of savings they have collected over the years. She says if they don't do something quick, that will completely erode.
Osage County Nutrition Director Jeanie Howerton said with the amount of people the Shidler site serves, it doesn't make sense to give them that extra funding.
Mitchell reconciled that by saying their site doesn't get any assistance from the city. Mitchell added she can get grants to fix things such as lighting in the kitchen, but grants will not help with day-to-day operations. The Board opted to table the topic for a week so Mitchell can provide the commissioners with more information.
Also tabled during Monday's meeting was a contract between the Osage County Sheriff's Office and Dr. Cameron Rumsey. If signed, Dr. Rumsey would provide medical services to the inmates at the Osage County Jail.
