Nowata and Caney Valley Trojans Battle Again in District Playoffs

For the second time this week, Nowata and the Caney Valley Trojans will face off on Friday. This time the stakes are higher, as the two meet in the district round of the 2A playoffs.
Nowata beat Caney Valley on Tuesday night in Nowata on senior night, 53-46. The Ironmen and Trojans meet in Nowata once again to open the playoffs.
The Nowata Ironmen enter the postseason with a record of 14-8. They closed out the regular season by winning three of their last four games and sealed the Northeast Valley Conference championship. They went unbeaten against Caney Valley during the regular season.
Nowata head coach Derick Ott spoke on the growth of his team from last year to this year.
The Ironmen were one game away from advancing to the area round of the playoffs last season, losing in the consolation regional championship to Colcord.
The Caney Valley Trojans enter the playoffs with a record of 5-17. They closed out the regular season dropping six of their last seven games.
Caney Valley head coach Tug Brinker touched on what he’s looking for out of his group.
This game between Nowata and Caney Valley is a non-elimination game. The winner advances to the winners bracket of regionals and will play the winner of Okemah and Haskell in Ramona on Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
The loser will face elimination in their next game and will play the loser of that same Okemah versus Haskell game in Ramona at 2:30 p.m. on that same Thursday.
