Bartlesville High had both its girls and boys get close but couldn’t finish in a big double-header against Sapulpa on Tuesday night.
After losing the two games in Sapulpa by a combined 53 points, both teams lost by a combined five points at Bruin Field House.
On the girl’s side first, Bartlesville fell 52-49. The Lady Bruins trailed throughout most of the game after holding an 8-0 lead out of the gate. Sapulpa would get up as many as nine, but the Lady Bruins kept battling back. A Kenzie Denny open look to tie it before the final horn fell off.
This Sami Shaeffer bucket got BHS closer in the final minutes.
BHS again got great outings from Kennedy Nubel, who finished with 17 and Shaeffer who had 16. The Lady Bruins fell to 10-8 on the year, 5-5 in District action. Congrats to Shaeffer, who went over 1,000 high school career points.
Meanwhile the Bartlesville guys fell at the end to Sapulpa, 52-50.
The Bruins were up most of the first three quarters. Sapulpa quickly erased an eight-point deficit midway through the third to lead into the fourth.
Despite not shooting it well, stifling defense and good ball handling kept the Bruins in it. Nash Zervas started to heat up late. He hit four three-pointers, including this one to give Bartlesville the lead in the fourth.
Zervas finished with 16. Trae Collins added in 12.
Bartlesville head coach Tommy DeSalme says there were some positives.
Both Bruin clubs head to Enid on Friday for another District double-header.
