OKWU Splits With Bethany in Road Trip Finale

Oklahoma Wesleyan basketball wrapped up their three-game road trip on Saturday with a split against Bethany in Lindsborg, Kansas. The women’s team dropped a back-and-forth game, 69-61, the men won their seventh straight by double digits, 71-56.
 
For the Lady Eagles, it was a back-and-forth game until the final few moments of the fourth quarter. OKWU trailed by five at the end of the first quarter, tied the game at 31 at halftime, but could not keep pace in the second half. They were outscored 38-30 in the final two frames. Haley Meely was the bright spot for the Lady Eagles, she scored 23 points and made three three-pointers off the bench, including this one to tie the game early in the fourth.
 
The Lady Eagles with the loss drop to 10-12 and 7-9 in conference play. They are ninth in the conference standings and sit two games out of a conference tournament spot.
 
On the men’s side, Donnie Bostwick’s crew made it seven wins in a row by 10 points or more. The Eagles held a 19 point lead midway through the first half, 32-13, and rolled on for another big conference win. The lead grew as large as 20 in the final three minutes of the game. Dylan Philip was a force off the bench, finishing in double figures with a solid shooting night from the outside. This three-pointer in the second half helped extend the OKWU lead.
 
OKWU held Bethany to 5-25 shooting in the first half. The Swedes made more free throws than shots for the game.
 
The Eagles with the win are 16-6 and 13-3 in the KCAC. With Friends University’s win over Avila on Saturday, the two teams remain in a tie for the conference lead.
 
Both OKWU basketball teams will come back home to start a three-game homestand on Feb. 5 against Southwestern. The women’s game will tip-off first at 5 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 7 p.m.
