Bullpups Heating Up at the Right Time

The Caney Valley Bullpups are stringing together wins just as the calendar starts to matter, and head coach Matt Washburn says the recent surge is a direct result of steady work in practice. Caney Valley has won three straight, starting with a makeup game against Eureka, followed by a dramatic 66–65 overtime win at home over Neodesha, and then a lopsided 70–26 victory against Bluestem. Washburn said the team is focused on improving each day while pushing toward one of its main goals: competing for the Tri-Valley League title.
The Bullpups face another key test Friday on the road against Humboldt. Washburn said the emphasis will be on defense, particularly tightening up their man-to-man scheme to slow down the opposition. Offensively, the team has been working to stay more disciplined within its sets instead of freelancing after the first screen or two. The hope is that cleaner execution will translate into more consistent scoring as the postseason approaches.
Next week brings a demanding stretch with three games, beginning with Cherryvale and Fredonia before a trip to Commerce, Oklahoma. Washburn said the team’s depth should help keep players fresh, but the focus will remain on smart practices, film study, and continued improvement from game to game. With momentum building and league play in full swing, the Bullpups appear to be finding their stride at the right time.
