Tom Davis
State Representative John B. Kane and State Senator Julie Daniels appearing Friday on KWON's CAPITOL CALL Powered by Phillips 66 where the dicussion focused on the state budget and several proposed state questions.
Representative John B. Kane announced a historic, early budget agreement reached by March 31—months ahead of the typical legislative schedule. He highlighted the collaborative shift at the Capitol, noting the "good faith" negotiations between the House, Senate, and a "surprisingly cooperative Governor Stitt." Kane called it the "roller coaster" of the last two weeks with negotiations that nearly "blew up" before stabilizing into a final deal.
As for the Governor’s reaction, Senator Daniels talked about personal moment with the Governor, describing his high spirits and getting a "big hug" following the agreement.
Senator Daniels said that lawmakers are rushing to advance four to five constitutional "cleanup" questions for the August runoff ballot before the April 10 deadline. Daniels clarified that these legislative state questions do not require the Governor’s signature to move forward.
Some Proposed Reforms:
Medicaid Expansion: Shifting it from the Constitution to state statute to give the legislature flexibility in funding and oversight (addressing federal match changes).
T-SET Reset: Maximizing income from the $2 billion tobacco settlement trust fund to improve state healthcare.
Additional Items: Mentions of Voter ID and Constitutional Convention rules.
