ONPD Aims to Deal With Mental Health in Positive Way

Ty Loftis
The Osage Nation Police Department is taking steps to train its officers to better deal with mental health patients they run across while in the field. Sergeant Patrick Luey was named Grand Mental Health's Officer of the Year and says being compassionate is the first step.
Luey got a certification last year to teach crisis intervention to police officers. Luey goes over what that class entails.
Grand Mental Health counselors often participate in officer trainings to show how mental illness can appear in someone's behavior and how that can be mistaken for substance abuse.
