Although school just ended, the nonprofit “Pack the Backpacks” is already hard at work preparing to supply thousands of Washington County students with school supplies before the fall semester begins.

Appearing on COMMUNITY CONNECTION, organizers Debbie Laroche and Shelly Davidson told us that planning and purchasing happens year-round.

Shelly said, "The mission is to ensure every child starts school equipped and confident, and to ease the burden on teachers."

Debbie said, "Supplies are bought in bulk during clearance and back-to-school sales to stretch donation dollars." She added, " The group serves about 2,500 students, roughly 30% of the county's school-aged children, across all public and private schools in Washington County—from Copan to Caney Valley. Every child comes prepared, ready to learn—and that’s the goal.”

Local churches now sponsor a "Product of the Month" for our cause, providing essential items like handheld calculators. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church provides workspace for packing and RSU donates storage space.

Applications for children in need of school supplies is open June 15. Families can apply online at packthebackpacks.org or in person at Mary Martha Outreach, Agape Mission, or Concern (dates vary; check website or Facebook).

An Arby’s fundraiser will be held June 24. A portion of proceeds will benefit the program when customers mention Pack the Backpacks or show a flyer—drive-thru included.
