OKWU Basketball Sweeps Ottawa

Oklahoma Wesleyan basketball swept Ottawa University on Thursday night in Bartlesville to wrap up their three game homestand. The women won, 69-58, the men won, 83-76.
In the women’s game, both teams started off slow offensively before heating up the rest of the way. OKWU led 29-24 at halftime before blowing it open in the second half. Although the Lady Eagles struggled from the outside, Haley Meely kept OKWU on pace with shots like this to start the fourth quarter.
Meely led all players for OKWU with 15 points. Rashaan Smith gave the Lady Eagles 14 points off the bench.
The Lady Eagles with the win improve to 12-13 on the season and 9-10 in conference play. The win closes the gap on sliding to the eight seed and qualifying for the conference tournament, but they are still two games back of eighth with three games to go.
The OKWU men faced a slight scare in the first half against Ottawa. The Braves shot 45% in the first half and had a one-point lead at halftime on the Eagles, 35-34.
The Eagles turned things around in a big way in the second half, outscoring Ottawa in the final frame, 49-41. Three players for OKWU finished in double figures with Jaden Lietzke leading the way with 17 points and 16 rebounds. He had this putback dunk to shift the momentum OKWU’s way in the final moments.
The win for the Eagles extends the win streak to 10 in a row. They are 19-6 and 16-3 in the KCAC. The win keeps OKWU at the top spot of the conference standings, one game ahead of Friends University.
Both OKWU basketball teams start a quick two-game road trip on Saturday with a stop in York, Nebraska. The women’s game will tip-off at 1 p.m. with the men’s game to follow around 3 p.m.
