Nowata Ironman Maliki Ornder won the powerlifting state championship in the heavyweight division in El Reno last weekend.

Among the top five finishers at the meet, Ornder weighed the least and dominated each lifting category. He lifted a total of 1,555 pounds, over 100 pounds more than the state runner-up. Ornder's lifts were led by a 630 pound squat, followed by a 360 pound bench press and a 565 pound deadlift.

Ornder played football for Nowata and spent his time on the offensive and defensive line. Ornder's senior season on the football field was this past fall.

Ornder is the second ever Ironman to win a state championship in powerlifting, and the first since 2011.

Along with Ornder, Nowata also sent three other athletes to the state powerlifting meet in El Reno last weekend. Asiah Saxton, Muaj Tsim Lee and Kalen Banuelos also qualified for state.
