Mustangs Young Talent Competing for Roles

The first day of spring team camp at Dewey High School brought plenty of energy for the Oologah Mustangs, according to head coach Sam Noble. Noble said he was encouraged by the effort and competitiveness shown by several younger players, including a freshman-heavy offensive line group and multiple freshmen competing for varsity opportunities. While he noted the team still needs improvement in physicality and intensity, Noble said he was proud of how the players continued battling through difficult looks during camp. He added that the Mustangs will continue focusing on building toughness and character after narrowly missing the playoffs last season.
One of the biggest storylines early in camp is the quarterback competition between Brock Lustick and Easton Gilmore. Lustick started most of last season as a freshman and currently holds the edge because of his experience, while Gilmore has impressed with his size, athleticism, and arm strength. Noble said both quarterbacks showed positive moments during camp while also continuing to develop as young players. Going into day two, the Mustangs plan to focus on quarterback reads, offensive line chemistry, and improving pursuit on defense as the team continues preparing for the upcoming season. Mustangs will be back at the team camp in Dewey Thursday, weather permitting.
