Mustangs Roll Past Vinita, Set Sights on Dewey

The Oologah Mustangs took care of business Tuesday night, sweeping Vinita with convincing wins on both sides of the bracket. The boys handled the Hornets 51–31 in a game head coach Caleb Branscum said was defined by smart decisions and unselfish play. He called it a tough place to play, but credited his team for handling the environment, sharing the ball as well as they have all season, and putting together one of their more complete defensive efforts.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Mustangs cruised to a 45–19 win, leaning heavily on a defense that head coach Clif Warford said has improved in recent games. He noted that when the shots start falling, his team becomes difficult to beat, and that combination showed up in a big way against Vinita. The lopsided final reflected a group that dictated tempo early and never really let the Hornets back into it.

Both teams now turn their attention to a much tougher test against Dewey. Branscum pointed out the Bulldogs sit at 20–2 with a 10-game winning streak, their last loss coming to a fully healthy Oologah squad. Warford echoed the respect, calling Dewey a well-coached, solid team that has won 11 of its last 12. In other words, the next matchup won’t be a walk-through, but both Mustang squads sound eager to see where they stack up.
