Mustangs Finding Ways

The Oologah-Talala Mustangs are sitting at 10-4 about a third of the way through the season, and while coach Layle DeVilbiss admits his team has not exactly played what he would call a “clean” game yet, the Mustangs keep finding ways to win. Oologah bounced back from a rough stretch during the Sperry Tournament, including losses to Dewey, by picking up a pair of wins over Locust Grove during spring break play. The Mustangs also split games during tournament action over the weekend to push their record to 10-4. Apparently style points do not count in the standings, which is probably good news for everybody involved.
DeVilbiss said the biggest positive so far has been his team's resilience. Oologah has consistently battled through mistakes, close situations, and uneven stretches at the plate to keep stacking wins. The Mustangs have been led offensively by catcher, Landon Roady, while also contributing on the mound. Freshman Jaxon Holland has stepped into the cleanup role and continues to deliver timely at-bats, while Maddux DeVilbiss has added speed and production in center field. Hook has been steady both defensively at second base and at the plate, while Carson Robertson has been a reliable glove at first base.
On the mound, Jett Griswold has emerged as one of the Mustangs’ biggest weapons. The left-hander opened the year with two complete games, striking out 17 batters while staying under 90 pitches in both outings. Griswold has also provided value in the outfield when he is not pitching, giving Oologah another versatile piece in a lineup that is still trying to find consistency. DeVilbiss said the key moving forward will be getting more production from the middle and bottom of the lineup and being more aggressive early in counts. Because apparently watching first-pitch fastballs go by and then trying to become a hero with two strikes is still a popular strategy.
