After a tough Halloween night loss to Grove, the Oologah-Talala Mustangs are regrouping for what could be their most important game of the season — a road matchup against the Wagner Bulldogs with a playoff spot on the line.
Mustangs fell 84–17 to Grove last Friday, a defeat head coach Sam Noble attributed largely to turnovers and injuries. “We had seven turnovers in that game, and those directly resulted in touchdowns for them,” Noble said. “We weren’t necessarily healthy. I didn’t have any of my starting linebackers out there. The kids played hard, but it’s not a recipe for success.”
Despite the setback, Noble said the Mustangs should be in better shape physically heading into the regular season finale. “We had a couple guys banged up late last week, but nothing too serious,” he explained. “We should definitely be healthier this week.”
The Mustangs and Wagner are tied at 3–3 in district play, with the Bulldogs holding the edge for the fourth and final playoff spot based on points. Both teams sit at 4–5 overall, making Friday’s matchup a true win-or-go-home scenario.
Noble said the focus this week is on execution and preparation. “Everything we want is still right in front of us,” he said. “It comes down to the work we put in this week and how we execute Friday night. The kids are still hungry to win.”
The Mustangs will need to clean up mistakes and play sound defense to have a chance. “We did not tackle last Friday night,” Noble said. “We’ve got to rally to the football and make sure we execute in all aspects.”
The Mustangs travel to Wagner on Friday, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. A win would secure the Mustang’s first playoff appearance in over a year.
