Mustangs Building Early Momentum

The Oologah-Talala Mustangs boys basketball program is off to a competitive start this season, opening with a solid win over Hilldale, followed by a narrow two-point loss to Catoosa. Head coach Caleb Branscum reflected on the early stretch, noting the team’s late surge against Catoosa after trailing by 12 in the fourth. Despite the loss, Branscum remains encouraged by his roster, which features a mix of underclassmen gaining significant minutes and learning quickly under pressure.
Branscum said the team continues to grow in chemistry and conditioning, especially with three football players moving directly into the basketball rotation—two of whom are currently leading the team in scoring. He noted that the quick turnaround between games can be beneficial, giving players a chance to move on from tough losses, regroup, and learn from each matchup. With a long season ahead, the focus remains on development, consistency, and improving each night on the floor.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to Coffeyville in the opening round of the Ty Hewitt Invitational, a familiar tournament opponent for the third straight year. Branscum expects an athletic, well-coached squad on the other side of the court, but says Oologah-Talala plans to lean into its own style of play and compete with confidence. A close history between the two programs sets the tone for another high-intensity meeting as the Mustangs continue building momentum early in the season.
