Mustang Boys Eye Next Season

The season is officially over for the Oologah-Talala boys basketball team, and it wrapped up in the regional round after a tough stretch in district play. The Mustangs fell to Miami in their opener but stayed alive in the double-elimination format with a 62-51 win over Wagoner. Their run ended against Holland Hall, 65-48, in a game that was closer than the final score suggests. Oologah-Talala trailed by just three at halftime before shots stopped falling and Holland Hall pulled away late.

Head coach Caleb Branscum said the story of the season goes beyond the 11-14 record. A key injury shifted roles and tested depth, but the group continued to compete against a demanding schedule filled with quality opponents. The Mustangs showed flashes of what they could be, especially in late-season wins and tight matchups against ranked teams. It wasn’t always pretty, but it was competitive.

With just one senior starter graduating, the outlook remains optimistic. Several players gained valuable varsity experience, including newcomers adjusting to the system. Branscum believes that shared experience and offseason development will be critical moving forward. The core returns, the chemistry is building, and the expectation is clear, take another shot next winter with a little more experience and, ideally, a few more wins to show for it.
