Injury Alters Close Loss for Mustangs

A key injury changed the tone of a close road loss for the boys basketball team Friday night at Skiatook. Head coach Caleb Branscum said the game was a two- or three-point contest when a starter went down just before halftime, forcing an immediate adjustment to the game plan. “It was a tight ballgame, and when he went down it changed our game plan for the second half,” Branscum said.
The loss slowed momentum that had been building after an overtime win against Mannford, with weather canceling other recent matchups. The schedule resumes with Vanita coming to town, a familiar and physical opponent. “Every time we play them it’s a dogfight,” Branscum said. “We expect the same thing again.”
Now sitting at 3-4 over the last 7 games, the team faces a busy stretch with three games in a short span, including a matchup with Verdigris tomorrow. With the injured starter’s status uncertain, younger players are expected to see more minutes. “The guys are still bought in and getting better every day,” Branscum said, “so we’re just taking it one game at a time.”
