Bartlesville’s summer baseball team dropped its opener in the Stan Musial World Series on Wednesday, as the Doenges Toyota Indians play their second pool game Thursday night.

The Tribe lost to the Oklahoma Lookouts, 5-4 in an entertaining one from downtown Bartlesville.

The Indians got in a hole early but nearly rallied for a win. Bartlesville trailed 4-0 after the first two frames after five walks and an error led to a pair of two-run innings for the Lookouts.

Zane Griggs nearly played the hero for the Tribe. Griggs came in to pitch in relief starting in the third and nearly held down the Lookouts enough for a comeback win.

Griggs struck out seven over three innings of shutout baseball, including striking out the side in the fourth.

It was about then that Bartlesville’s bats started heating up. Coen Miller and Rhett Lue drove in a couple runs in the bottom of the fourth. Then, down by three in the sixth, it was Miller again who had the biggest hit of the night for Bartlesville.

It was a single off the wall in right field that scored two more and drew the Indians within one run.

The Tribe would leave the game-tying run at second base in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Indians lost despite out-hitting the Lookouts 8-5.

Bartlesville is still alive for the semifinals of the event, as the Lookouts fell to the Tulsa Sandlot in the nightcap later on Wednesday night, 9-4.

The Indians must win by two rims and hold the Sandlot to eight runs or less to advance to the next round.

A 6:30 first pitch against the Sandlot Thursday evening on KWON – AM 1400, FM 93.3 and 95.1 with a video stream on KWONTV.com.
