The Caney Valley Bullpups weathered the mud, the mistakes, and the Galena Bulldogs Friday night — quite literally — as they powered their way to a 44-12 victory in the Kansas 2A Round of 32 at Caney Memorial Stadium.

Playing through slick field conditions, Caney’s usually sharp offense sputtered early with a pair of first-half turnovers, including a fumbled exchange near the Galena 3-yard line. But the Bullpup defense stood tall, bending without breaking and holding the Bulldogs to just one first-half touchdown — a second-quarter pass from quarterback Chase Cottrell to tight end Isaiah Farfan.

After halftime, Caney Valley found its rhythm the old-fashioned way — behind the offensive line. The front five opened up lanes for the Bullpups’ trio of backs: Traxcyn Garton, Jace Buckley, and sophomore Konner Paulie, who took turns gashing the Bulldog defense and putting the game out of reach.

Galena managed one late touchdown in the fourth quarter, but by then the Bullpups were already in full control, grinding out the clock and sealing their eighth win of the season.

With the victory, Caney Valley improves to 8-1 and advances to the regional round of the 2A playoffs. The Bullpups will host either Riverton or Cherryvale next Friday night at Caney Memorial Stadium.
