Bartlesville High football had some good stretches, particularly on offense, but the Bruins couldn’t hold on against Newcastle in their season opener Friday night at Custer Stadium.

BHS fell to the Racers, 51-34.

The Bruins build at 15-point lead late in the second quarter, only to see Newcastle score 31 unanswered to answer back and put the game away in the fourth quarter.

The Racers had two kick returns for a touchdown and a blocked punt. Those special teams miscues plus three BHS turnovers gave Newcastle what it needed.

There were plenty of bright spots. Sutton Williams had 2 touchdowns early, including this one to begin the season.

Michael Kent was the star. Despite a few turnovers, the sophomore dazzled at times.

He threw for three touchdowns, just under 300 yards and ran for more than 100 more on the ground.

This pass to Ivan Griffith was the final BHS score of the first half.

The Bruins also got banged up toward the end of the game. Bartlesville is 0-1 on the year and will stay at home against Claremore this coming Friday night.
