Washington County Prepares for Annual Property Resale Auction

Tom Davis
Bargain hunters and curious onlookers alike will gather Monday, June 9, as the Washington County Treasurer’s Office holds its annual property resale auction.
Appearing on COMMUNITY CONNECTION, Washington County Treasurer Melissa Thornbrugh and Deputy Treasurer Jennifer Wingo shared details on the auction, which features around 50 properties with delinquent taxes dating back to 2021.
“If you haven’t paid your 2021 taxes, your property could be on the list,” said Thornbrugh. “But there’s still time to pay — right up until the sale begins.”
The auction starts promptly at 9 a.m. in the basement of the Washington County Administration Building at 400 S. Johnstone Ave. Doors open at 8 a.m., and all bidders must register in advance — either online at oktaxrolls.com or in person before the auction begins.
“It’s a 'cash-only' auction,” Wingo emphasized. “You’ll need to pay immediately after winning a bid, so come prepared.”
Properties are sold “as is,” and potential buyers are encouraged to research locations and check for liens with the County Clerk’s Office. “It’s definitely a ‘buyer beware’ situation,” Wingo said.
Bids start at either two-thirds of the assessed value or the amount of taxes owed — whichever is greater — and are open to competitive bidding. Proceeds from the auction go toward settling outstanding taxes and fees, with any excess returned to the former property owner.
The annual resale, held statewide on the second Monday of June, is the result of months of preparation, according to Thornbrugh. “We start the process in January. It’s a lot of mailings, research, legal notices — all done by a team of just five people.”
