The Westside Community Center is proud to announce its annual Juneteenth Celebration, set for Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 501 S. Bucy Avenue. This year’s theme—“Family Reunion”—calls the community together not only to celebrate, but also to reflect on Oklahoma’s unique emancipation story and the enduring spirit of Black resilience.

While many recognize Juneteenth as marking the end of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865, the journey to freedom in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) was delayed until 1866 due to treaty negotiations with tribal nations. This little-known history will take center stage during this year’s celebration, along with a special tribute to the Black soldiers who fought at the Battle of Honey Springs—a pivotal Civil War victory that helped pave the way for that long-awaited freedom.

“We’re really leaning into Oklahoma’s unique story—specifically the fact that emancipation was delayed in Indian Territory until 1866—and the role that Black soldiers played at the Battle of Honey Springs in paving the way for that freedom,” said Shavon Robles, Executive Director of Westside Community Center. “Holly Hutchins, Director of Honey Springs Battlefield will help us tell that story. During the program, we’ll also honor the soldiers who fought for a freedom many had not received. And we’ll connect that legacy to Oklahoma’s historic Black towns—a testament to what our ancestors, both black and native, built in the aftermath of that struggle.”

The day-long event blends cultural education with festive, family-friendly experiences. A mix of new features and returning favorites will ensure there’s something for everyone, from history lovers to foodies to basketball fans.

Highlights of the 2025 Juneteenth Family Reunion include:

  • 1st Annual BBQ Smoke-Off Contest – A sizzling competition for local grillers and pitmasters, with trophies and 2026 invitations on the line.
  • Classic Car Show Reunion – Partnering with the iconic Bartlesville’s Finest car club to showcase vintage and custom rides.
  • Keynote presentation by Holly Hutchins, Director of Honey Springs Battlefield -
Highlights the Battle of Honey Springs and its impact on the emancipation of enslaved people in Oklahoma.
  • Tribute honoring Black infantrymen from Kansas and Oklahoma who served with distinction.
  • Kids Zone, DJ, Artisan Vendors & Food Trucks – Intergenerational fun with local flavor and creativity on full display.

“Juneteenth is more than a day of remembrance—it’s a call to unity, progress, and collective pride,” Robles added. “This year, we’re bringing together families, neighbors, and generations to honor the past and celebrate the powerful legacy of what was built after freedom finally came.”

The event is free and open to the public. Registration for vendors, contest participants, and volunteers will open soon.
