Nowata got their playoff campaign started in the right direction on Friday night, sealing a district championship with a win over Caney Valley, 49-37.

After Tuesday’s contest where Nowata struggled early to find offense, Friday saw no early struggle. They took a double-digit lead into the halftime break and held the Caney Valley Trojans to just 14 points in the first half.

The second half started on the right foot for the Ironmen, the lead grew as large as 19 at one point. Shots like this from Talon Thompson got Nowata’s offense rolling.

Caney Valley, despite the first half struggles, made it interesting in the fourth quarter. With around five minutes to play, that 19 point deficit was trimmed down to single digits in the final frame. Zac Longan hit this three-pointer in the final minutes to keep Caney Valley in it.

Caney Valley could not turn defensive stops later in the game into points as Nowata hit free throws down the stretch to seal it.

The win for Nowata advances them to the winners bracket of regionals. They will play against the winner of Okemah and Haskell who will play on Saturday night. Nowata’s next game will be in Ramona at Caney Valley High School at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 20.

The loss for Caney Valley does not end their season, they will have another chance to stay alive in the playoffs. They will be at their home gym in Ramona in must-win territory. Their next game will be on that same Feb. 20 date against the winner of that Okemah and Haskell game. Tip-off will be at 2:30 p.m. from Holly Ward Gymnasium.
