Oklahoma Wesleyan basketball split with Sterling College on Saturday at the Mueller Sports Center. The women fell, 81-70, the men won another by double-digits, 77-63.
The women’s game was back-and-forth in the first half, with both sides finding an offensive groove. OKWU held a two-point lead at halftime, 39-37, but that would be the last lead they would have. The Lady Eagles were outscored in the second half, 46-33. The Lady Eagles tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, feeding Rashaan Smith the ball. She had this basket in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to four.
That’s as close as OKWU could make it, Sterling pulled away with a 7-0 run to win it. The Lady Eagles with the loss drop to 11-13 and 8-10 in the KCAC. They are two games out of playing in the KCAC tournament with four games to play.
The OKWU men made it nine wins in a row, eight of them by double digits as the Eagles took care of Sterling.
In a game that started in slight panic mode for the Eagles with slow-starting offense, they trailed by eight through the midpoint of the first half. That deficit would quickly evaporate as OKWU tied the game at halftime, 34-34.
OKWU found their offensive groove in the second half. They outscored the Warriors in the final frame, 43-29. The lead grew as large as 16 points in the final minute. Four Eagles finished in double figures with Derrick Talton Jr. leading the way with 16 points. He made this shot in the late stages of the second half to extend the lead.
The Eagles with the win improve to 18-6 and 15-3 in the KCAC. With Friends University falling Saturday in overtime to Ottawa, the OKWU men now take sole possession of first place in the conference with four games to go.
