Brian McSweeney
Bulldogger basketball finished a sweep of Nowata on Tuesday. The girls dominated again, 46-17, the guys won a thrilling back-and-forth game, 55-45.
In the girls game, Nowata stayed around in the first quarter before Dewey blew it open. Jalyn Trotter made a game-opening three-pointer for Nowata, but the Lady Bulldoggers responded quickly. They led 15-5 at the end of the first quarter and 30-7 at halftime.
Presley Smith led the way for Dewey, with crafty shots on the inside and big shots from the outside to blow it open. She made this shot early to extend the lead.
The Dewey girls with the win are 10-7 and have won three of their last four.
The boys game started as a game of runs. Nowata got off to an early 11-1 lead before Dewey came storming back late in the first quarter. From being down 10 points early, Lance Knight’s Bulldoggers took control in the second half and led by as many as 14. They held off a late Nowata comeback in the fourth quarter.
Austin Eastman proved to be a force for the Bulldoggers yet again. As part of that first quarter run, he hit this three-pointer to get Dewey back in it.
The win for Dewey finishes off the season series with Nowata as a split, 1-1, after Nowata beat Dewey back in December. The Bulldoggers move up to 10-8, the Ironmen fall to 12-8.
Dewey will head on the road for a third installment against Caney Valley – Ramona on Friday. Nowata will head back home for a rematch with Oklahoma Union that will also be on Friday.
