Oklahoma Wesleyan basketball completed the season sweep of Avila University on both the men’s and women’s sides Wednesday night. The women won another overtime thriller, 61-58, and the men won their sixth straight by double digits, 84-70.

The Lady Eagles were in a back-and-forth battle with Avila all night long. OKWU’s largest lead was seven at one point, but that lead quickly evaporated in the late stages. In the final seconds of the fourth quarter, Shade Richardson hit a shot to give the Lady Eagles the lead. However, on the other end of the floor, Avila’s Anastasia Wright hit a layup at the buzzer to send the game to OT.

OKWU outscored Avila in overtime, 9-6, thanks to this three-pointer in the final moments by Tatiana Gilford. The Lady Eagles with the win are now 10-11 and 7-8 in KCAC play.

The OKWU men continued to bring their offensive prowess to the forefront. The men’s game also saw some back-and-forth moments, as a 14-point lead for OKWU slipped away around the midpoint of the second half. Yashi McKenzie was the bright spot again for the Eagles, converting this shot into a three-point play to bring the momentum OKWU’s way.

The Eagles are now 15-6 and 12-3 in conference play. They are still heavy contenders for the top spot in the KCAC.

Both OKWU basketball teams wrap up their three-game road trips on Saturday for another test with Bethany. The women’s game will go first at 1 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 3 p.m.
