Bartlesville High football is still snake bit in close games, as the Bruins fell in another one-score game on Friday night in a homecoming battle against Sapulpa.

Chieftains held on to top Bartlesville 35-28 in double-overtime.

The game making it to OT was somewhat of a miracle.

The Bruins were down seven and got an interception inside Sapulpa territory with 49 seconds remaining. After a roughing the passer penalty on Sapulpa, Bartlesville would improbably tie it up on this 31-yard bomb from quarterback Nate Neal to freshman Michael Kent.

The touchdown forced overtime, and Bartlesville would take its only lead of the game a couple plays later, on this run up the middle from junior running back Sutton Williams.

However, Sapulpa always answered. The Chieftains got a touchdown on a 3rd and goal from the nine in the first OT, then another TD on 3rd and goal from the 13 in the second. The Bruins failed on a fourth and goal from the four in their possesion in the second overtime, and Sapulpa held on.

Bartlesville had a couple unfortunate turnovers on tipped balls in the fourth quarter. Two times a solid Bruin pass ended up in Sapulpa’s hands for an interception on a tip. Both were inside the Chieftain 20-yard line.

Bartlesville is 0-5 for the first time since 2019. Another tough one awaits next Friday when BHS travels to Muskogee.
