Friends Remember Charlie Bowerman
Nathan Thompson
A longtime volunteer, athlete and leader in the Bartlesville community has died.
Charlie Bowerman passed away on Sept. 2 at the age of 83. He turned down a chance to play in the NBA when he was selected by the New York Knicks in the fifth round of the 1961 draft. He instead was recruited by Phillips Petroleum Company as not only a player for the Phillips 66ers, but also a career that spanned nearly four decades. He retired in 1999 as Phillips Petroleum's vice president of planning, corporate relations and services.
Bowerman and his wife, Corky, made a lifelong commitment to giving back to the community through serving on numerous nonprofit boards.
Bob Pomeroy says Charlie made a huge difference in his own life, serving together on the BSA Cherokee Area Council Board, the Bartlesville Sports Commission and other organizations throughout the community.
Charlie's legacy continues after he helped form the Bartlesville Community Foundation in 1998. BCF Executive Director Laura Jensen says Charlie and Corky left a lasting impact for generations to come.
Charlie Bowerman's memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Church in Owasso.
