A former Bartlesville Police Officer of the Year was laid to rest Monday and honored for his lifetime service to law enforcement.

Jim Meyer, Jr., passed away on Aug. 29 at his home in Dewey. He was 67. He started his law enforcement career in Olatha, Kansas before accepting a position with the Bartlesville Police Department in May 1981.

Former Police Chief Tracy Roles, who is now the assistant city manager in Bartlesville, says Meyer made several sacrifices in his career.

Meyer received the Purple Heart Award after he was shot. He helped establish the Critical Incident Response Team and was named Officer of the Year in 1998. He retired from the Bartlesville Police Department in October 2017.

During his memorial service on Monday afternoon, hundreds of people filled the Bartlesville Community Center to celebrate his life, including a funeral escort from dozens of first responders and a full salute from the Bartlesville Police Honor Guard.

There is a farewell gathering at Crossing 2nd in downtown Bartlesville with a final salute at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Sept. 11).

Jim Meyer, Jr.
