Drummond Defends His View on Religious Charter Schools

In early June, the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board approved an application for what would be the nation's first publicly-funded religious charter school.

State Attorney General Gentner Drummond says the decision is unconstitutional and violates religious liberty. That viewpoint has put him at odds with Gov. Kevin Stitt and State Superintendent Ryan Walters.

During a visit in Bartlesville on Tuesday, Drummond says if Oklahoma allows one publicly-funded religious school of a certain faith, then the state would have to allow funding to all religions. He says that's a risk he's not willing to take.

Drummond says the U.S. Supreme Court will ultimately have to make the decision whether or not a publicly-funded religious charter school violates the Constitution or not.
