A startup basketball team of a homeschool players is creating quite a buzz in Washington County. The Washington County Homeschool Alliance Ambassadors are a first-year program that creates opportunities for homeschoolers Bartlesville, Dewey, Caney Valley and Copan to show off their athletic talents.

Casey Parham, a pastor at Dewey Christian Church heads up the program. Parham says the idea sprung from the large amount of students that participate in a homeschool co-op that meets at his congregation.

Parham knew there was potential with this group. The team known as the Ambassadors, plays their home games at St. John Catholic School in Bartlesville. WACHA participates in the Kansas Christian Conference Association for its regular season. Parham says the team has played a mixture of travel games and local games.

The Ambassadors beat Hominy on Dec. 11 for its most marquee win to date. The team currently sits at 11-4 in its inaugural season. WACHA is a curious team when it takes the floor. Parham starts four freshman around six-foot five-inch senior Ty Hagan who leads the team in scoring. Parham says Hagan’s intelligence benefits him greatly.

WACHA plays next against Broken Arrow’s Immanuel Lutheran on Friday at 6:30 p.m. for the girls’ team and 8:00 pm for the boys at St. John Catholic School in Bartlesville.
