Today in Oklahoma Sports History… It was on April2, 2016 that OU lost to Villanova 95-51 in the Sooners fifth appearance in the Final Four.

The 2015-16 OU club was a historic one - OU spent its entire season ranked in the top-10 in the country. OU finished up the year at 29-8 and at third place in the Big 12 Conference.

Oklahoma had beaten Cal State Bakersfield, VCU, Texas A&M and Oregon en route to the Final Four, which was held at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The 2016 appearance in the Final Four was the Sooners first since 2002. OU also made the national semifinals in 1988, 1947 and 1939.

The 2015-16 Sooner season was much anticipated, as OU had made the Sweet 16 a year prior and returned stars in Ryan Spangler, Jordan Woodard, Isiah Cousins and Buddy Hield.

Hield was the obvious leader on the OU club.

Hield was born in the Bahamas and picked Oklahoma over Kansas out of Sunrise Academy, a prep school in Wichita. His senior year in Norman he averaged 25 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He led the nation in three-point shooting and won the John R. Wooden Award, given annually to the best college basketball player in the country.

Hield ended up being the sixth overall pick of the 2016 NBA draft. He was selected by New Orleans and is currently playing for the Sacramento Kings.

Despite the sparking season, it did not end well for the Sooners, whose 44 point lost to Villanova is the largest margin of defeat in Final Four history.
