Tempers Flare in Barnsdall Win Over Nowata

The first game of the high school basketball season produced from fireworks in more ways than one on Tuesday night in Barnsdall.

The Lady Panthers and Panthers came away with a sweep over Nowata. The Barnsdall girls won 51-26, while the Panther boys won 57-42 at Joe Gilbert Gymnasium.

Barnsdall used a big third quarter to pull away from Nowata on the guy’s side.

The Panthers outscored Nowata 24-7 in the third quarter to give themselves the entire margin of victory. Shots were not falling for either team in the first half, as Barnsdall led 20-15 at the break.

Finally some three-pointers went down for Barnsdall in the third quarter, with both Derek Wilson and Michael Marin hitting a pair. This one from Marin beat the third quarter buzzer, and helped put the Ironmen away for good.

Nowata would cut the lead down to 12 at one point late in the fourth quarter, but the contest was already decided.

Barnsdall avenged two losses to Nowata a season ago.

Tempers were high, as there were four technical fouls in the game, and play was stopped multiple times to end players and coaches barking at one another. No ejections were made, but neither team seemed pleased with each other at the end of the contest.

Both teams, and all of the high school basketball in the area, are off until Tuesday.
