Sterling College Sweeps OKWU

Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles and Lady Eagles traveled to Sterling, Kansas Saturday afternoon to take on KCAC foe Sterling College.  It was a Warriors sweep as the Lady Eagles lost 78-72 while the Eagles lost in overtime 93-84 after having a 17 point lead in the first half.

In the ladies game, the Lady Eagles had to deal without Patience Gitau who had foul problems had a 10-point lead late in the second quarter.  Lady Warriors answered with an 8-0 run and trailed 33-30 at halftime.  OKWU led 56-51 going into the fourth quarter, but Sterling College outscored the Lady Eagles 27-16 to win by eight points.  Shelbie Kirby had a huge day led OKWU with 27 points while Tiffany Rieger added 16 points.  Sterling's Kilee Harris led with 24 points.  Lady Eagles shot 42 percent from the field, but only went 3 for 18 from the three-point line.  Lady Eagles were out rebounded 55-38. Of those 55 rebounds for Sterling College, 18 were offensive boards.  OKWU drops to 9-9 overall and 5-5 in KCAC play.

The Eagles led for most of the game until the last few minutes.  Eagles led as many as 17 points late in the first half, thanks of some hot shooting from the 3-point line.  OKWU led 39-29 at haltime, but were outscored 47-37 in the second half.  Eagles had a shot to win with just a few seconds to go. Elbert Lawerence 3-pointer was short and sent the game into overtime tied at 76-76. It was all the Warriors in overtime, outscoring the Eagles 17-8 to win by nine points.  Sterling had three players with double-double.  Josiah Ray led with 35 points and 15 rebounds.  Fayola Oyatayo finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Maurice Williams added 10 points and 11 rebounds.  OKWU had two players finish with double-double.  Breiman Alexander led OKWU with 31 points 11 rebounds and made eight 3-pointers.  Shaq Martin for the Eagles finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The difference was the second half.  Sterling College shot 61 percent and finished the game shooting 42 percent.  The Eagles shot 33 percent from the field and went 16 for 48 from the 3-point line for 33 percent.  OKWU drops to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in KCAC play.

Both the Eagles and Lady Eagles will be in action this Thursday as they will host Tabor College. Ladies play at 6 and the men will play at 8 o'clock.
