Our preview of area high school football teams takes us to Lenapah as we take a look at the Oklahoma Union Cougars. We chronicled earlier in the offseason that OKU wanted to keep things light during the offseason. The Cougars are continuing to emphasize conditioning and weightlifting in the summer period.

Just like the rest of the area OKU will take the field for their first practices on August 12. The Cougars goal heading into 2019 is to make back-to-back playoff appearances. To compete consistently at the Class-A level a team needs to be flexible. According to head coach Stephen Trammell this could mean a position change for one of last year’s stars.

Mason Seigel saw time in the backfield early on in 2018 but his move to quarterback sparked a late-season push that ultimately put the Cougars in the playoffs for the first time since 2006. The running back position has been important for OKU in the last two seasons. Casey Armstrong surpassed 1,500 yards in 2017 and Joey Russ eclipsed that number last year as well.

Jace Gillmore and Mason Pittman will be a factor in the tailback battle as well. Whether it is Seigel or another of several options, the Cougars bell-cow back could be the most pivotal spot on the roster.

OKU opens up the season with a renewed rivalry against Nowata on August 30.
