OSSAA: Sports Still On

The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association held a press conference on Thursday morning to talk about the viability of high school sports in the state this fall.

No real new information was released.

The main takeaway: The OSSAA is moving forward with fall activities as they are scheduled, with the knowledge that there could be delays, pauses and postponements because of school stoppages and other issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

OSSAA Executive Director David Jackson says that everything is on the table in an effort to get some activities in.

Jackson said the OSSAA is aware that the sports will not look normal for a while.

Most decisions on specific issues related to athletics will be up to local school districts.

Districts will decide whether fans, cheerleaders and bands are allowed at games - and how many fans can attend. Districts will decide what happens to team if an athlete tests positive, and if their school district goes virtual, if their athletics will continue.

Bartlesville High Athletic and Activities Director Thad Dilbeck says he knows the choices administrators make over the next few weeks have an effect on many students and families.

Jackson said if sports are moved to the spring, all activities would try to be played, but with truncated seasons.

However, as of right now, all fall sports are on as scheduled statewide. Bartlesville, and other area schools, have been practicing softball, volleyball and cross country for a week and a half - with scrimmages already underway.
