OKWU Soccer Ready for Title Run in 2018

Oklahoma Wesleyan has asserted its athletic prowess in many sports over the past several years. One of those dominant teams has been the men’s soccer program, led by head coach Jamie Peterson.

The Eagles were on the doorstep of a national championship last season. Dreams were cut short after a loss in the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament to Wayland Baptist in a penalty kick shootout.

That was the only loss for the Eagles in 25 matches last season.

Peterson says that he hopes the team can build off last year and be in contention for a national championship once again.

The Eagles will lean heavily on Alberto Picchi in 2018. The Spanish striker was a terror for opposing defenses as he tallied 24 goals. Picchi scored multiple goals seven times last season. The junior forward also finished as the runner-up for the NAIA National Player of the Year award.

OKWU came in it at No. 3 in the nation in the preseason edition of the coaches’ poll released earlier this week.

The Eagles open their season next week with two exhibitions matches. The first, at home against Rogers State on Tuesday, August 21 and then a road bout against Oklahoma Baptist on Friday, August 24.
